How to identify signs of flood damage in a car

Flood water reaches wiring, control modules, bearings and interior materials that may look normal after cleaning. A tidy cabin does not rule out past water exposure.

Check for inconsistent marks

Look for silt, staining or corrosion in places that are hard to detail: seat rails, spare-wheel wells, under carpets and around electrical connectors. One mark alone proves little, but a pattern deserves attention.

Use your nose

Persistent damp or heavy fragrance can suggest an attempt to cover a musty interior. Run the ventilation and inspect the boot and lower trim rather than judging the front seats only.

Test every electrical function

Windows, locks, lights, infotainment, cameras and warning systems should work consistently. Intermittent electrical faults can be difficult and expensive to trace.

Review records and identification

Compare maintenance records, inspection information and the vehicle identity. Ask directly about water exposure and previous insurance work.
