Car dashboard warning lights: what to do next

A warning light is a starting point, not a complete diagnosis. The symbol, colour, vehicle behaviour and owner manual together tell you how urgently to respond.

Red warnings need prompt attention

A red oil pressure, brake, temperature or charging warning can signal a condition that may make continued driving unsafe or damaging. Stop in a safe place and check the manual.

Amber warnings usually need investigation

An amber engine, ABS, tyre pressure or other system light often means the vehicle needs checking. Whether you can continue depends on the symbol and how the car behaves.

A flashing light can be more urgent

Some systems use flashing to signal a more serious or active fault. Reduce risk, avoid hard driving and follow the model-specific guidance.

Notice what happens with the light

Tell the workshop or tow operator about noise, smell, smoke, loss of power, temperature readings and when the warning appeared. A photo of the dashboard can help.

Stop if the car feels unsafe

Do not rely on colour alone if braking, steering, temperature or engine behaviour has changed. Find a safe stopping place and arrange help.
