What to do when you get a flat tyre

A tyre can lose pressure gradually or fail without much warning. Reduce speed smoothly, avoid sudden steering and find a place away from traffic before inspecting the wheel.

Recognise the warning signs

Pulling to one side, vibration, heavy steering or a tyre-pressure warning can indicate pressure loss. Do not continue at normal speed to see if it improves.

Stop where you have room

A level, firm surface away from moving vehicles is best. Switch on hazard lights and apply the parking brake. If the available shoulder is narrow or unsafe, stay protected and call for help.

Check the equipment and conditions

A wheel change needs the correct spare, jack and wheel tools. Follow the jacking points and procedure in the owner manual. Never work under a vehicle supported only by its emergency jack.

Temporary spare tyres have limits

Space-saver and temporary spares may have lower speed or distance limits. Read the label and arrange a proper repair or replacement promptly.

When towing is the right answer

Towing may be needed when more than one tyre is damaged, the wheel or suspension is affected, no usable spare is available or the location is unsafe for a wheel change.
