BEV, PHEV and HEV: a practical driver guide

The badges sound similar, but the vehicles use their batteries and engines differently. The owner manual remains the best source for model-specific charging, towing and emergency instructions.

Battery electric vehicles

A BEV drives using electric motors and a rechargeable traction battery. It does not rely on a petrol engine for normal propulsion. Charging method and range vary by model.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles

A PHEV has a chargeable traction battery as well as an engine. It can cover some journeys on electric power, then use the engine or a combination of both.

Hybrid electric vehicles

An HEV combines an engine with electric assistance but is not normally plugged in by the driver. The vehicle manages charging through its own systems.

Roadside recovery is model-specific

Some electric and hybrid vehicles must be transported with all driven wheels off the road. Incorrect towing can damage the drivetrain. Tell the operator the exact model and follow the manufacturer procedure.

High-voltage safety

Do not touch damaged orange cables, battery components or leaking materials after a collision or flood. Keep clear and tell emergency or recovery personnel that the vehicle is electric or hybrid.
