How to jump-start a car safely

Jump-starting is familiar, but modern vehicles do not all use the same connection points or procedure. Read the owner manual before connecting cables or a booster pack.

Inspect before connecting anything

Do not attempt a jump-start if the battery is cracked, leaking, swollen, frozen or unusually hot. Keep flames and sparks away. Confirm that both vehicles and the equipment are suitable for the procedure.

Use the specified connection points

Some cars place the battery under a seat, in the boot or behind trim while providing jump terminals elsewhere. Follow the marked positive point and recommended ground point in the manual.

Keep cables clear

Route leads away from fans, belts and other moving parts. Check each connection before starting. If a clamp becomes hot, sparks heavily or will not hold securely, stop.

After the engine starts

Disconnect in the order stated by the equipment or vehicle instructions. A short drive is not proof that the battery and charging system are healthy. Arrange a test if the battery went flat without an obvious reason.

Call roadside assistance when unsure

Professional help is sensible in traffic, poor weather, restricted parking areas or when the vehicle has unusual battery access. Give dispatch the make, model and symptoms.
